Time Capsule: Are we happy our grandchildren may never see an elephant except in a picture book?
copper, sterling silver, broken jade bracelet, photos
2018
I incorporated a piece of jade and designs based on the woven baskets of Botswana into my capsule to represent Asian and African elephants, respectively. The shape of the jade also suggests an elephant’ trunk, while the silver spiral forms the eye and the silver leaf-shape is the ear. Inside the container I put photos from news articles about the baby elephant born on World Elephant Day 2018 in the San Diego Safari Park and the slaughter of 90 elephants by ivory poachers in Botswana, which was known as wildlife refuge in the past. I chose this depiction of the universal cycle of life and death at the hands of humans in the hopes of reminding future humans that we are not the only ones who live on this planet. The title is drawn from a quote by natural historian David Attenborough.
