In this age of “do more and do it faster,” I am drawn to slow, labor-intensive craft techniques. My jewelry and glass artwork encompass themes of human rights and connection: to community, to the past and future, and to nature. My artistic background was in glass initially, but I have been experimenting with combining glass and metal in interesting ways for nearly ten years. My current work explores the intersection of line, light, and color by combining engraving and enameling. My intention is for my artwork to inspire human connection and encourage empathy through the use of narrative, evidence of the artist’s hand, and choice of materials, namely metal and glass, with a long history. It is my hope that viewers will slow down to examine the details and consider the stories behind my pieces.
I have benefited from an eclectic education, which has contributed to my diverse body of work. I received my BA in Applied Design with an emphasis in Jewelry and Metals from San Diego State University and my AA in Studio Art from Diablo Valley College. I have also been influenced by Pierce Healy, whose engraving class I took at Penland School of Craft; Linda Darty, who I studied enameling with during my semester abroad in Italy; and Judith Schaechter, my quirky stained-glass professor at University of the Arts. My work has been exhibited in California, Pennsylvania, and Italy, as well as with the Glass Art Society.
